Minimally Invasive Surgery

Through modern neuronavigation systems and special microsurgery instruments, the surgeon is guided to the most inaccessible areas of the brain, through incisions of a few centimeters. This makes possible the removal of benign and malignant tumors (primary and metastatic) as well as vascular malformations.

Minimally invasive brain surgery also involves the use of the endoscope, through the nasal cavity, at the base of the skull, which allows access to deeper areas of the brain (anterior cranial fossa, sella turcica, clivus, etc.). This optimally treats pituitary adenomas, Rathke cysts, meningiomas, chordomas, craniopharyngiomas and other diseases of these anatomical areas. The main advantage of minimally invasive brain surgery is the reduction of morbidity caused by usual surgical access. Thus, the patient has fewer scars (or no scars at all), less postoperative pain, shorter duration of hospitalization and faster recovery.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) involves performing surgery on the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, with as little surgical trauma as possible compared to conventional surgery. To achieve this, cylindrical dilators or endoscopes and micro-instruments are used, which allow the performance of surgeries with high precision, without the need for wide surgical accesses. At the same time, with the use of a suitable neuronavigation system (O-arm, Medtronic) of the latest technology, the execution of exceedingly small diameter incisions or the placement of screws percutaneously is achieved, with astonishing accuracy. Unlike traditional "open" surgery, MISS realizes less tissue trauma, shorter hospital stay, much less blood loss with usually no need for a transfusion, minimizes postoperative pain, smoother and faster mobilization reducing the rate of wound infection.

Minimally invasive spinal surgery can be performed to decompress nerve roots or the spinal cord in appropriately selected patients in cases of disc herniation, osteophytes, rupture or spinal stenosis, to stabilize the spine in cases of vertebral disc and in kyphoplasty / elastoplasty for osteoporotic or metastatic fractures.
